Navigation design for Heathrow
The aim is to create user-centric navigation menu to allow users to access information within a content rich website.
To enrich the user experience further we created a module sitting above the main navigation, with personalised information (flight card, login details, rewards, inspirational quotes, as well as Weather and time information).
The Process
What I did
Prototyping
Ideas and sketches
I conducted card sorting (both open and closed) and tree testing to understand the usability issues within the site structure. I did this by using optimal workshop remotely with 400+ participants. I was able to obtain customer feedback on targeted user journeys and assess the suitability of the navigation design and site structure.
Due to the time constraints of the sprint and lack of resources, we conducted lean usability tests within the Publicist office. I mentored the Senior UI designer on how to conduct research and got her to get involved in testing for the first time!
Collaborating with the UI designer
The concept of the nav is based on ‘over the rainbow’, where the top part of the navigation expands over the rainbow gradient, to show login, profile and weather functionality. I conducted lean UX testing and fed feedback to refine the design further.
Outcomes
A set of mobile and desktop prototypes were produced after the first rounds of tested designs and were later polished up by the Senior UI Designer in Principle. We both pitched the new design to the client, who loved the concept and a further 6 weeks was added to finish the navigation design based on the second round of testing. Some of the design features e.g Weather information were stripped back to go in the backlog for the release of MVP1.
