Improving the UX of the Camden & Islington Trust Intranet

Following the success of the new trust City & Islington NHS Trust website, C&I were looking to upgrade their intranet for internal staff. With a very limited budget, CMS had to be open source and usability tests were only allowed once during the process. C & I were looking for a major redesign and upgrade to their existing intranet website that would be responsive for mobile devices and make information easier to find. This included improved content sections for health professionals. I came midway through the project  the beginning of the project where card sorting had been already done to build the information architecture and content strategy.

The Process

What I did

1

Analysing Survey Data

Understanding user sentiment around the current intranet and features most often used
2

Design & Prototype

I wireframed and prototyped a responsive design on UX Pin
3

Analysed Findings

I analysed tasks and feedback from the participants and recommend a list of amendments to the intranet designs.
4

Amend Designs

I amended wireframes and the prototype in UXpin. The final sitemap and wireframes that then went to the developers for the intranet to be built.
5

Usability Tests

I wrote an interview script and set up the usability testing rig. As well as conducted usability tests and interviews with the existing prototype with 5 participants at the C& I offices

Design & Prototype

Usability tests

One to one sessions

Analysed Findings

Participants included a range of people working in various departments at C&I NHS Trust who would be using the app in the future.

Iterating designs

As a last step in this discovery work, useful feedback from testing sessions was incorporated into the wireframes. I used an excel spreadsheet to keep track of iterations.

Outcomes

• As a last step in this discovery work, useful feedback from testing sessions was incorporated into the wireframes. before moving to development stages by developers.
• Written discovery report for client.
• Set of 5 videos – plus edited testing reel.
